Tui have a new feeder

South Westland teems with birdlife.  You can hear Tui (too'ee) Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae in many places in NZ but they are most abundant where human spaces adjoin the native NZ bush, such as Franz Josef.  They have a preference in the late afternoon for the tree that overlooks the lower terrace and Potters Creek.

Any near their use-by-date dried fruits, nuts, seeds, honey, molasses etc is formed into a delicious cake and hung in their favourite tree.  It might be that during your stay at Hukawai Lodge you are fortunate enough to get fairly close to one of the Tui who like to stop in and check out what's going on.
